How to Play and Win at Roulette - Roulette rules and strategy - A Roulette Tutorial

Roulette -

Roulette is one of the most popular casino games. The game was first played in France in the 17th Century.

The roulette wheel is made up of either 37 or 38 slots - the numbers 1 to 36 and either 1 or 2 "zero" slots. The slots are alternately coloured red and black and the "zeros" are coloured green.

In some cases, to place a bet you must first exchange your casino chips for special coloured roulette chips at the table. Each player has different coloured chips so that the dealer can more easily keep track of each player's bets. You must exchange these chips back to casino chips once you have finished playing.

To bet, you then place your chips on a number or colour on the table. There are also different number combinations that you can bet on.

Once the bets have been placed, the dealer spins the roulette wheel and places a small ball in a groove. As the wheel slows down the ball will fall into one of the 37 or 38 slots. If the number or colour matched those which you bet on, you have won the bet.

There a number of different kinds of bets that can be made in rouletter to combine different numbers:

  • Split bet - this is placing your chips on the line between two numbers. You have then bet on both of these numbers.
  • Corner bet - this is placing you chips on the corner of 4 different number boxes. You have then bet on all 4 of these numbers.

You can also place your bets on special boxes that represent special combinations of numbers:

  • Odd numbers
  • Even numbers
  • All red numbers
  • All black numbers
  • Groups of 12 or 18 numbers
  • Action numbers - 10,11,12,13,14,15 and 33. These numbers are spread evenly around the roulette wheel.

You can also bet on the "zero" slots. When the ball lands on one of these, all other bets lose.

Roulette Payouts -

Numbers Bet Payout
1 number bet: 35 to 1
2 number bet: 17 to 1
3 number bet: 11 to 1
4 number bet: 8 to 1
6 number bet: 5 to 1
12 number bet: 2 to 1
18 number bet: 1 to 1

The house advantage on a single zero table is 2.7%, on a two zero table it is 5.26%.

Roulette Strategy -

Roulette is purely a game of chance so there is very little you can do to influence the outcome of your bet.

The house advantage on American style roulette (two "zeros") is extremely high at 5.26%. However, it is even higher on the 5 number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) at 7.89% so don't make this bet.

The better kind of roulette to play is European style, single zero roulette as the house advantage is much lower. Some Las Vegas casinos and many online casinos offer European style roulette.

Another advantage of European style roulette is that if you bet an even money bet such as betting on black and the reult of the spin is the zreo, you don't automatically lose your money. Your bet is then termed "en prison" or "captured". The bet is then left there for a second spin. If your bet then comes up on the second spin, you receive your bet back. This reduces the house advantage slightly on even money bets.

Ultimately your success will come down to your luck on the day and knowing the best time to stop.
